Role Overview

We are seeking an exceptional research engineer to support high-impact technical AI safety research across multiple globally distributed research teams and accelerating AI safety research by building high-value, innovative research tooling. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Make crucial contributions to a broad portfolio of technical AI safety research projects and collaborate with upcoming AI safety talent across the world.
  • Take ownership of designing, building, and shipping high-value research tooling to accelerate AI safety research.
  • Provide expert machine learning and software engineering guidance to our research teams.
  • Be involved in other core aspects of empirical research including supporting on data, model, and compute access, data analysis and visualization, ensuring reproducibility of our experiments and high quality of code and technical documentation.

  • You are experienced with large parts of the ML stack and are keen to learn whatever else it takes to make our research succeed.
  • You are keen on helping plan efficient experiments in technical AI safety research and unblocking researchers on engineering challenges.
  • You are highly interested in empirical research, enjoy discussing experimental methodologies, and are keen on teasing the maximum amount of information and learning out of ML experiments.

What is the time commitment?

We are open to a range of options, from part-time to full-time. You will have considerable discretion over when you do your work, but we expect you to adapt to the needs of our global community and research initiatives.

What experience levels are you considering?

We are open to all experience levels, as long as the above requirements are satisfied. However, we expect candidates to have a strong engineering background as well as knowledge of and a keen interest in technical AI safety research. Experience building and shipping software is highly valued as well. In case of doubt, please apply!

When should I apply?

What does the process look like?

After initial screening of your application, we will send you a very brief technical screening test. Then we will schedule a brief first interview to understand your motivation for the role and your research background. Finally, we will invite you to a longer interview with several team members to discuss your experience and vision for the role in more detail.

What is the compensation?

We will adapt compensation to your experience level and location. As an early-stage non-profit, we expect the pay to be equivalent to an hourly rate of $30 - $60.
