Dear Apart Community,

Welcome to our newsletter - Apart News!

At Apart Research there is so much brilliant research, great events, and countless community updates to share.

This week we have been in San Francisco for our Apart Retreat, where we attended conferences, saw old friends, and visited other AI labs to talk about frontier AI.

San Francisco was the home of this year's Apart Retreat.

We attended conferences, saw old friends, visited other AI labs to talk about frontier AI, walked in the sunshine, and spoke about Apart strategy for 2025.

Being in the epicenter of frontier model development gave us lots of food for thought as we pondered how we can impact the world positively by bringing about safe and beneficial AI for us all.

Esben Podcasts

Our Co-Director Esben Kran laid out his vision of a safe and beneficial world alongside advanced AI with the For Humanity podcast - which just reached over 2 million views.

They also cover our recent ICLR oral paper, DarkBench, and our new Seldon Accelerator.

Esben explained that "we need to choose the world we want to live in and then proactively design it." Watch it all here.

Having Die Zeit idea?

During Paris' AI Summit, Esben was interviewed by ZEIT ONLINE about AI & unemployment. He explained that:

"Intelligent AI will not stop getting better. What we need to understand is that it will soon be able to take over your job. Everyone needs to be prepared for this."

"This cannot be solved by retraining people for new jobs. After many jobs were already replaced by machines at the beginning of the 20th century, those that rely on human intelligence have remained – and these are now threatened by AI."

At Apart Research we have been thinking deeply about the effects of advanced AI on individuals and the economy. Keep an eye out for work and events in this area in the coming months.

Women in AI Safety

Apart Research’s inaugural Women in AI Safety Hackathon finished up earlier this week.

We were thrilled to partner with BlueDot Impact, Women Who Do Data, and Goodfire AI for a fantastic event with over 350 signups, making it our most popular hackathon ever.

We will have our full writeup with results early next week. With submissions ranging from technical to educative, we cannot wait to share the winners with you all.

Opportunities

Have a great week and let’s keep working towards safe and beneficial AI.
