Take full ownership of Apart's research fellowship programs. Design new fellowship programs with partner organizations, hire the team, execute on them, and take them to their most ambitious version.

About Apart

Apart Research is expanding its fellowships programs and is hiring a Fellowship Lead to help us grow and run them. We run these fellowships with partner organizations: small teams of fellows spend several months on AI safety research under experienced mentors. Through our Apart Fellowships, we also invite the strongest teams from our research sprints into a mentored research phase.

The Role

You'll set the strategy of our fellowship programs, design and launch new fellowships with partners, build the team of Research Project Managers to run each cohort, and keep improving how our fellowships run. You'll also connect our strongest fellows and teams to funding and job opportunities within the AI safety space. You’ll evaluate each fellowship and use what you learn to improve future cohorts.

Core Responsibilities

  • Set the fellowship strategy and grow the fellowships: find new partner organizations and launch new partnered fellowships.
  • Design each fellowship with its partner: who it’s for, who will mentor fellows, cohort size, and timeline.
  • Iteratively improve and streamline how the fellowships run: templates, systems and automations.
  • Hire, build and lead the team of Research Project Managers who run the cohorts.
  • Run the Apart Fellowship: invite the strongest teams from our research sprints into a mentored research phase, connect them with research mentors, and support them through their research process.
  • Connect the strongest fellows and teams with funding opportunities and jobs in AI safety.
  • Run impact analysis on the fellowships, and use it to iteratively improve them.
  • Run fellowship operations: stipends and honoraria, contracts and participant agreements (with legal and finance advisors), and compute access.
  • Own communication with fellows, mentors, partners and funders, and report progress against the fellowship OKRs.
  • Represent Apart's fellowships at conferences and career events.

Until we hire Research Project Managers, you'll also run cohorts directly:

  • Coordinate participant and project selection end to end.
  • Support teams through the program: coordinate weekly check-in calls and give individual support to fellows and teams.

Required Qualifications

  • High agency: you start things without being asked, and you finish them.
  • High context: you follow AI safety closely and have your own strategy takes: what matters now, who is working on it, and where the gaps are.
  • AI-native: you build and use AI tools and automations in your own work.
  • Talent judgment: you can identify promising researchers. You have a clear view of what makes someone likely to have outsized impact in AI safety, and you spot it early.

Nice to Have

  • Experience running or working in a fellowship or research program.
  • Experience managing people.

What We Offer

  • Ownership of the Fellowships at Apart Research.
  • Travel support for conferences and team gatherings.
  • A $5,000 annual learning and development budget and protected time for reading, thinking and upgrading your AI workflows.
